The CHICAGO TEACHERS UNION is seeking an Accountant to serve under the Director of Financial Operations to assist in areas of financial accounting, managerial accounting, informational systems and fund accounting.  Emphasis of responsibility will include assisting in conversion of accounting and financial platforms, development of procedures for financial operations and incorporating new technology to meet the emerging needs of the organization and other such duties relating to the financial operations as assigned and deemed appropriate.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Accurate and timely completion of financial accounting core functions and supporting documentation.
  • Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents.
  • Maintain accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
  • Accounting for special events and programs.
  • Provide financial information to management by analyzing accounting data and preparing reports.
  • Provide support for the DFO and CTU leadership in all financial matters, including compilation of financial reports for presentation at Executive Board, Executive Committee, House of Delegates’, and other meetings.
  • Assist the DFO in preparation of annual budgets and cash flow forecasts to include comprehensive analysis of actual expenses versus budgeted amounts.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining internal controls to protect the assets of the organization.
  • Assist as necessary with the various annual audits by preparing schedules, analysis, reports, etc. and provide related support for the auditors to complete each audit in an efficient and effective matter.
  • Answers accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting accounting policy and regulations.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Assist in other regulated reporting, including but not limited to
    • Department of Labor- LM2
    • IRS- W-2/W-3, 1099/1096, 941, 940, 990, 1120, etc.
    • State of IL
  • Review agreements or contracts having financial impact on the organization prior to finalizing and making recommendations, as appropriate, to ensure the financial health of the organization.
  • Ongoing review of current and future services and goods purchases with goal of premier services or goods at the minimal outlay for the organization.
  • Administration of all property and liability insurance, subject to review and approval by the DFO and Executive Board.
  • Occasional supervision and oversight of staff in the financial department.
  • Utilizing interpersonal and communication skills to assist, lead, influence, and encourage others.
  • Regularly and professionally serve and communicate with varying individuals and companies including:
    • Managers
    • Colleagues
    • Vendors
    • Members
    • Affiliates
    • Regulatory entities
    • Service providers
    • Others 
  • Prepare special financial and ad hoc reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
  • Maintains confidence and protects operations by keeping financial information confidential.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree/certification in accounting, business or finance preferred.
  • 7+ years of relevant Accounting experience
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience
  • Must be a professional with the ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements.
  • Proven knowledge of accounting principles, best practices, standards, laws and regulation.
  • Proficient at all cycles of general ledger accounting including AP/AR, reconciliations, adjustments, period end closing, fixed asset and depreciation schedules, etc.
  • Competent with weekly payroll cycles including mandated and voluntary deductions and employee benefits & pension calculations.
  • Experience with and ability to adhere to collective bargaining agreements and requirements of regulatory entities.
  • Proactive self-starter who enjoys a fast-paced environment and an ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet pressing deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solver with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to communicate effectively with internal and external business partners at various levels.
  • Team player with a strong work ethic.
  • Advanced computer skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint) and member tracking databases.
  • Skilled, comfortable, and current with changing financial/accounting technology, software and applications including but not limited to:
    • Sage AccPac, NetSuite, or other ERP, Unionware, Concur, ADP
    • Prior conversion experience and/or chart of accounts overhaul preferred
  • Prior experience working within a not-for profit and/or labor union environment desired.
