A statement from the Chicago Teachers Union on the efforts of striking SEIU healthcare workers at Loretto Hospital demanding better healthcare conditions for patients and equitable wages:

“The Union educators of this great city stand in solidarity with the more than 200 Loretto Hospital workers currently on strike for safer working conditions, better patient outcomes and fair wages. These brave union siblings were on the frontlines during the pandemic, keeping our communities safe and saving lives. Now, they are asking to be treated  like the superheroes the hospital claimed they were.

As educators, we also are on the frontlines every day. We understand that teachers’ working conditions are students’ learning conditions. Likewise, the working conditions of Loretto staff impact the safety and well-being of Loretto patients. More staffing and better pay will translate into better patient care.

As a safety net hospital serving the city’s West Side, Loretto Hospital healthcare workers, who are predominantly Black and Latine, deserve a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. Now is the time for the management to offer up a fair and equitable contract.”
