Over 12 million people in the United States are struggling to make their monthly student loan payments, and millions more see economic and personal opportunities pass as they prioritize paying down their debt. Does this sound like you or someone you know?
Many of these people may qualify for free federal programs that can help reduce their monthly payments and eventually lead to student loan forgiveness, but these lifeline programs are significantly under-enrolled. In an effort to help our members get access to these programs, Chicago Teachers Union and the American Federation of Teachers are proud to host a Student Debt Clinic which will provide information on how to enroll in Income-Driven Repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
The CTU and the AFT are hosting a free “train the trainer” professional development for members interested in learning about student debt in order to help their fellow members reduce their student debt. Members who participate in this training will learn the strategies and tools to be able to lead student debt clinics in their schools. The Student Debt Train the Trainer professional development will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 3, 2018, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the CTU Center (1901 W. Carroll Ave., Room 125). Attending both days of the Train the Trainer PD is required.
To attend the November 2-3 Student Debt Train the Trainer, please click here to pre-register. Select the “TRAIN THE TRAINER Chicago Teachers Union 11/02/18 to 11/03/18” from the required “Student Debt Clinic” drop-down menu and type in the full name of our local (“Chicago Teachers Union 1”) in the required “Affiliate” field. Registration is first come, first serve, and we must cap attendance in order to ensure that we are able to provide maximum assistance to attendees. If you can’t make this clinic, we hope to offer them again. For example, if you are attending the CTU Delegate and School Leaders Conference on Saturday, October 27, 2018, there will be an afternoon workshop on student debt.
Additionally, we are offering a free short Student Debt Clinic open to any CTU member with student debt or interested in learning about how to reduce their student debt on Friday, November 2, 2018, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the CTU Center (1901 W. Carroll Ave., Executive Conference Room). This is just an informational clinic and will not provide the tools to be able to lead workshops for fellow members.
Please click here to pre-register to attend the November 2 Student Debt Clinic. Please select the “Chicago Teachers Union 6PM 11/02/2018” from the required “Student Debt Clinic” drop-down menu and type in the full name of our local (“Chicago Teachers Union 1”) in the required “Affiliate” field.
Again, registration is first come, first serve, and there will also be an afternoon workshop on student debt at the CTU Delegate and School Leaders Conference.
Managing your student loan debt is the first step in taking on the inequities which plague our system of higher education, and we look forward to seeing you at the Student Debt Clinic or the train the trainer session and working together to find a collective solution to the problems of student debt and college affordability!
