Daley’s proposal to gut LSCs is an assault on last vestiges of Harold Washington’s commitment to grassroots democracy in our schools.
CHICAGO, January 10, 2019—Chicago Teachers Union President Jesse Sharkey released the following statement today in response to mayoral candidate Bill Daley’s proposal to eliminate Local School Councils in Chicago’s public schools:
“This is a terrible idea at a time when we need more democracy, accountability and transparency in our schools, not less. This proposal shows complete contempt for parents, educators and neighborhood residents, and is cut from the same cloth as the autocratic control exercised by the last two mayors to the enormous detriment of our neighborhood public schools and the Black and Latinx neighborhoods they anchor.
“Local School Councils were the most important democratic reform to emerge—and remain—from late Mayor Harold Washington’s school reform efforts. The Daley machine has worked for decades to undermine Harold’s legacy, and now we see the former mayor’s brother trying to kill off the last vestiges of Harold’s commitment to grassroots democracy.”
