Dear Members of Graduate Students United at the University of Chicago:
On behalf of the Chicago Teachers Union and its 26,000 members, I write to express our support for the Graduate Students United (GSU) strike at the University of Chicago.
We would like to offer our support in your current strike and demand for recognition.
As graduate employees, you are deeply vital to the mission of the University and you have a right to a seat at the table where decisions are made that impact your lives. You have a right to adequate healthcare, a pay process that is timely and transparent, a formalized grievance procedure with independent arbitration, access to affordable housing and childcare, clear job expectations, institutional justice and equity, and moreover, a collective voice in your workplace.
Especially in an institution that lauds itself as a protector of free speech values, you deserve to be heard. We mean that not only in a formal sense, but in a truly substantive and powerful way–negotiating improvements in the conditions in which you teach, research, and live.
We support GSU.
We call on President Zimmer and Provost Diermeier to recognize your union unconditionally and to bargain immediately.
Lastly, we respect the work you do every day and wish you the very best in your efforts to win a democratic workplace.
In unity and solidarity,
