CHICAGO, Sept. 21, 2021The Chicago Teachers Union issued the following statement following today’s shooting death of a 15-year-old student at Simeon Career Academy:

Our collective heart goes out to this student’s family and friends, as well as the Simeon school community, after another unspeakable tragedy impacting children in our city. This is the second 15 year-old shot in Chicago in as many days, and the second heartbreaking loss for Simeon this year following the passing of 18-year-old Zmaya Bell in March from complications due to COVID-19.

Our union will be working with the CTU Foundation Quest Center to offer trauma support and loss circles to Simeon students and staff. We urge continued support of the Peace Book Ordinance from youth responders Good Kids Mad City, and support of all other groups across the city working to provide healing and address trauma in their communities.

The Chicago Teachers Union represents more than 25,000 teachers and educational support personnel working in Chicago Public Schools, and by extension, the nearly 400,000 students and families they serve.
