As the city grapples with an Extreme Heat Watch, CTU President Stacy Davis Gates will visit with educators at Washington High School and uplift the solutions to aging public-school facilities
CHICAGO—On Wednesday morning, CTU President Stacy Davis Gates will continue her back-to-school tour with a visit to George Washington High School on the city’s East Side. During her time, Davis Gates will greet students and staff, speak with educators and uplift the need for a CPS 10-year facilities master plan that is green, sustainable and centers the needs of students and the surrounding community.
Davis Gates’s visit to Washington High School comes during an Extreme Heat Watch for the city of Chicago that has put the city’s public school infrastructure center stage. With so much at stake for city students this year, these extreme heat conditions have once again highlighted the impact of climate change on city classrooms and showed the work that must be done to ensure students and families have what they need to grow and thrive this school year.
The 2012 CTU contract fought for air conditioning in each city classroom, and recent struggles over COVID protocols left each CPS school with Safety Committees that allow educators and administration to collaborate regarding health conditions for their school community. Davis Gates and CTU educators believe still more work can be done to keep hallway conditions temperate and modernize school buildings.
President Davis Gates, union educators and community members will hold a press conference to update families and residents about their collaboration with CPS to keep students and educators safe through this extreme weather event and into the future. During the press conference, Davis Gates and members will discuss the reconvening of Safety Committees at schools and other elements of their partnership with CPS and other city entities.
