CTU President Stacy Davis Gates addresses the AFT Civil, Human and Women’s Rights Conference

Over the weekend, CTU President Stacy Davis Gates addressed more than 200 AFT members and allies in Houston at the AFT Civil, Human and Women’s Rights Conference. Gathered to share the problems in their communities and actively work together to fix them, the conference was centered around uplifting real solutions for kids, communities and educators. New agreements will help alleviate substitute shortage

We have two exciting updates to share that should provide relief connected to the substitute teacher shortage CPS has been experiencing for the last several years. We won an amendment to the pension code that lifts the cap on the number of days retirees can work in high needs vacancies and we finalized an MOU on staffing support for expanded parental leave rights. Early Childhood Committee wins Rigor Walk relief

This summer, our Early Childhood committee met with CPS officials to push back on developmentally inappropriate expectations associated with “rigor walks.” Read more about their work to improve this situation.

Political team report: Newcomer resources, ending Illinois voucher program priorities for October

This month, our legislative/political team is working on two critical issues for our schools. CTU members organize to end private school voucher scheme, keep public dollars for public schools

First contract victory for CTU members at Christopher House charter

After a year of contract negotiations, the 50 CTU members at Christopher House Elementary School, a charter school in Belmont-Cragin, have reached a tentative agreement for their first ever union contract with the CTU. Read more.

Endorsed CTPF Trustee Candidates

The Chicago Teachers Pension Fund has emailed electronic ballots for their active trustee election and mailed ballots for its pensioner trustee ballots. When preschool teacher Duwuana Buice was out sick one day, her We Care mentor called to check in and see how she was doing. “It’s like you have someone who cares and is willing to show up for you,” Buice said of the We Care program. “And my mentor doesn’t lecture, she meets me where I’m at.
