Three union members from NYSUT - A Union of Professionals were among the 10 people tragically killed May 14 when a gunman opened fire at a Tops Supermarket in Buffalo, New York. We must remain committed to addressing root causes of violence in this nation, recognize violence as the public health crisis it is, confront racism as a contributor to violence, and treat violence in the context of an epidemic of income inequality and chronic economic hardship that has been neglected in many communities for decades.

Creator, writer and actress Quinta Brunson responded: “Respectfully, Abbott Elementary the tv show is not a politician. Politicians are. They need to do something about it.”

Irma Garcia, wife and mother to four children, and a 4th grade teacher at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, is another educator killed in yesterday's attack. All of our love and sympathy goes out to her family and loved ones, and to all victims, families and the Robb community. 💔

Today marks two years since the death of George Floyd, and our society is still not well. We often talk about healing, but it’s not healing we seek in the face of tragedy…heartache will always be there. What we need is change, so that others will never feel that same pain. ❤️
