Forum for Parents, Educators and Community: CPS Reopening Needs Trust, Learning & Care
Apr 16 @ 10:30 am

The online community forum originally scheduled for this evening has been rescheduled to Friday, April 16 at 10:30 a.m. This important event highlights parent and community demands for school reopening this spring and this coming fall – including how more than $2 billion in added federal funding provided to CPS for pandemic-related expenses must be spent on our students, whose Black and Brown communities have been hurt most by COVID-19. Please promote the event with parents and community members by forwarding this email and/or sharing the images below on social media. More background and details are provided below.

CPS is poised to receive more than $2 billion in federal stimulus money. Parents, youth, educators, and school communities should play an important part in deciding how this money is spent.

But we know we will have to get organized to make this a reality, as recent events demonstrate. For months now, students, parents, and educators have pleaded with the mayor and CPS to make remote learning work better. Yet on January 31, Mayor Lightfoot said that “we have done everything that we can to make [remote learning] work as good as possible”.

We know that is not true. In fact, with the focus on returning students in person, we are seeing a predictable decline in the quality of remote learning.

This forum will provide background about the family and community-backed #TrustLearningCare campaign and how to fight for what our communities need — in the here and now as well as in the coming months and years.

Over the past month, parents and youth have gathered to craft the Trust, Learning, and Care (TLC) Demands. Under Trust, we want CPS to be more transparent and to stop cutting corners. For Learning, we must center the needs of those who need the most and respect local school stakeholders’ authority. For Care, we remind ourselves that we are still in a pandemic and must do more to support our school and family community.

We are demanding that the new federal funding be used for our students and their families to recover from this pandemic and bring real equity and justice.
